How to decorate a honeycomb shelf
After we moved to our new apartment, I spent two months looking for some sort of decorative solution for the wall behind our dining room table, all to no avail. We immediately gave up on hanging a large piece of art. We just couldn’t find anything we loved to commit to being the focal point of our living space. I thought about doing a gallery wall too, but there was just too much work involved and if I’m being completely honest, I was a bit over this home decor trend.
So with art out the window …… what other options are there? Framed photography. You would think with all the photos we took on our trip I would really want to print out our favorite photos. Maybe it’s because I share my photos here and on Instagram a lot, but I definitely don’t want to hang large photos of myself on the walls of my home. Nick agrees with me, which isn’t surprising considering he prefers to stay behind the camera.

Talk about a barricade. It wasn’t until I fell into a black hole of crazy wall decorating ideas on Pinterest that I finally discovered hexagonal aka honeycomb shelves! The unique shape and the ability to easily personalize and display the decor immediately drew me to these shelves. I knew right away that these would be the perfect solution and a great way to display small ornaments, small ceramics and live plants.

Nick obviously handled this part ?
It’s actually really easy! Since the shelves are already light and won’t be carrying anything heavy, we can use the basic screws to hang the shelves directly on the drywall.
Since five of the six shelves will nest together, we’ll go one by one. After marking where the top of the shelf would hang, Nick drilled a screw into the wall, about 1/4 inch off the wall, for the shelf to hang. It really was that easy!

Obviously, if you are ordering larger shelves or planning to display items that weigh a lot, you may want to consider using a heavier option when placing these items on the wall. I suggest you check anywhere you purchase shelving for suggestions!
I decided to decorate our room with personal mementos (most of which were purchased on our international trip) and small plants. Nick and I love how it all turned out! The shelves are a truly unique focal point in our main living space, but I love that they don’t overwhelm or detract from what’s happening in the room. And the color of the wood complements our dining room furniture! Also really love that there is a bit of greenery in our main living space now. ? .
