When it comes to the best and most luxurious spa experiences in the Washington area, we hear two names over and over again.
The Salamander Resort
500 N. Pendleton St., Middleburg
In addition to the luxurious accommodations and expansive grounds that include an equestrian center, many consider Salamander’s spa to be the resort’s real draw. The space offers private treatment terraces, relaxation areas and a spa patio with an infinity pool, hot tub, fire pit and cabanas. One of Michelle Obama’s clients is makeup artist Carl Ray, who recommends the detoxifying body scrub and aromatic steam room. hydraFacial is a favorite of hair and makeup artist Claudine Fay. Wedding planner Laura Held loves the deep tissue massage and says the atmosphere, level of service and amenities are worth the hour drive from Washington.
Four Seasons
2800 Pennsylvania Ave., NW
Perhaps because Four Seasons is where many famous visitors stop in town, the spa has mastered the art of discretion. That makes it a favorite of DC cosmetic dermatologist Tina Alster (who receives 90-minute massages). Hair stylist Serena Hampton Yates also enjoys the massage and tranquility (think soft music and lavender scents), despite its relatively small space. Public affairs specialist Gloria Dittus chose the Georgetown Glow facial, while Lynda Erkiletian, founder of THE Artist Agency, is known to use the steam room and sauna before a facial or massage, followed by a haircut. Ismail enjoys a cocktail or dinner at George at Four Seasons and at Bourbon Steak. Because it’s Four Seasons, it’s not cheap: massages start at $185 and the most expensive service, the Ionixlight Facial, starts at $655. (It’s a favorite of content creator and stylist Anchyi Wei.)
Try a facial spa
Less lingering and more interested in finding a good facial? Facial bars and other venues offering niche products are sprouting up all over Washington. Here are four to try.
Glo30
4915 Cordell Avenue, Bethesda
Creative Ladder CEO Dionna Dorsey visits this Bethesda members-only medical spa for monthly facials. The attraction is Seraphine Alston, “an amazing aesthetician who knows a lot about dark skin.”
Silver Mirror Spaghetti
1301 19th St., NW; 1355 Third St., SE
This Korean beauty-inspired facial bar from New York has locations at Dupont Circle and the Navy Yard. Its popular 30-minute facials start at $99 and are designed for busy people.
The Spa at Dolce Vita Salon
6829 Elm Street, McLean
The spa recently expanded its menu as part of the buzzing Dolce Vita salon, but we’ve heard rave reviews about the facials from beauty guru Yvette Zarookian.
The Care Shop
1338 Wisconsin Ave., NW
This Georgetown-based store sells natural skin care products and offers a wide variety of facials. Most cost $200 – less if you choose a subscription. It also features Reiki and waxing.
