Can’t decide which breast pump to buy? Then you’re in luck, because I’ve tried a few! ? .
A little backstory! I started my breast pumping journey with absolutely no knowledge whatsoever of how many breast pumps are out there or even how to use them properly. I felt completely overwhelmed, scared and embarrassed about how little I knew. What are these buttons and what do these settings mean?!!! Thanks to Google, Instagram and a lot of trial and error, I finally figured it out, found the pump that fit my lifestyle and gave me the results I wanted.

It is also important to remember that there are many factors that can affect milk production and contribute to successful breastfeeding. The breast pump itself is only part of the overall puzzle. Using the correct flange size (here’s a handy printable ruler you can use to measure yourself), hydration and your pressure level are also important. In this article I explain some of the ways I’ve increased my breast milk supply, and a pumping schedule that starts with me fully pumping!
I am by no means an expert, but pumped exclusively for most of the first few months after Nate was born (6-8 times a day!) After that, I became very familiar with the breast pumps you will see below.

Spectra S2 Plus breast pump
I started my breastfeeding and breast pumping journey with the Spectra S2 Plus breast pump. It is one of the most popular double electric pumps on the market and has a large number of in-depth positive reviews. I ordered this pump through my insurance when I was still pregnant (it was fully covered) and thought I probably wouldn’t use it as often as I aimed to breastfeed exclusively. Oops – if only I’d known!

Overall, it’s a great, easy to use pump that gets the job done, but it does have a few drawbacks that were eventually enough to stop me using it as my main pump: 1) It doesn’t have a rechargeable battery and needs to be plugged into a power outlet when in use, but I did find a way to hack through this external battery pack to make it radio powered. In retrospect, I wish I had ordered the battery-powered Spectra S1. 2) The size. It’s possible to travel with it (I’ve pumped it in the car) but it’s a pain and there are other pumps that are easier to carry around. 3) Not as strong as other pumps. I felt the Spectra S2 had less suction than the comparable Motif Luna double electric pump and I didn’t empty it.

This is the first pump I would recommend to any new mum. It has hospital grade strength, a rechargeable battery, a quiet motor and a lightweight, sleek design. The functions and features are very similar to the Spectra S2 pump but I find them more modern, higher level of suction power and more efficient. I also found the Motif Luna easier to carry and hold in one hand if I had to get up to do something during breast pumping.

BabyBuddha portable breast pump (the pump I mainly use now)
I decided to try out the BabyBuddha breast pump after seeing recommendations from several breast pumping accounts I follow on Instagram. I felt I had reached my maximum pump output with the Motif Luna (around 20 ounces a day) and was desperate to increase my supply – something many mums claim happened after they started using the BabyBuddha.
I was also very interested in the BabyBuddha’s small, wearable size – it’s the world’s smallest double electric pump! Although it’s conventional in the sense that it requires flanges and tubing like the Spectra or Motif Luna, the pump motor is about the size of an old Nokia phone and light enough that you can hang it from a lanyard around your neck, freeing up your hands too! It is also battery powered and can be charged via USB.

I’m not going to lie. This pump takes it to the next level of strength. Literally, BabyBuddha’s level 1 is stronger than the highest level on the Spectra or Motif Luna pumps. For someone just starting to use a breast pump in strong suction mode, I would actually recommend using a gentler pump for 2-3 minutes as a ‘warm up’ (I use my Motif breast pump) and then transition to the BabyBuddha. it took me a few weeks to get used to the strength, but in my experience it was definitely It was worth it, as I did notice an increase in my supply. Using only the BabyBuddha to pump 6 times a day for a fortnight, I was able to pump enough to meet Nate’s daily needs (about 28 ounces) and we were able to stop supplementing with formula. I have also not had a blockage in my milk ducts since I started using this pump.
I love love love this pump and I am so glad I found it. It has completely changed my pumping journey! That being said, I wouldn’t recommend it to a new mum as their first pump due to its strength. I think if I used it right away I would dread pumping again LOL. it’s a game changer for experienced pumping mums who have tried Spectra and Motif style breast pumps and need something stronger or are trying to increase their supply, but probably not for mums who only pump occasionally! necessary.
